Utilita Arena Newcastle is one of the most prestigious and important venues in the North East of England as the largest indoor entertainment and exhibition venue, on the iconic Newcastle River Tyne, with an 11000-capacity auditorium, 600 surface car park in the city centre of Newcastle, entertaining 500,000 visitors per year.

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our team working on a casual event driven basis within the Operations Department as Venue Crew Supervisors offering venue support for some of largest touring productions and exhibitions and supervising the work of the casual events crew. The role involves ensuring a high standard of service is maintained and providing a safe environment for all clients and visitors to the Arena.

Main Duties

•Leading and supervising Venue Crew and when employed contracted Crew, delegating workloads to crew members whilst remaining operational in the role.

•Assisting the Operations Coordinator and Events Managers in preparations for all public events including concerts and exhibitions.

•Operating and installing our house drape systems to create different venue configurations for a portfolio of events

•Liaise with Operations Coordinator and Event Managers to ensure awareness of the event requirements and react positively to any last minute changes, keeping them informed of any issues and if work is running behind schedule.

•Ensure all relevant event paperwork and check sheets are completed as appropriate and any issues are reported.

•Working on the changeovers between each event (sometimes overnight) to configure the venue for the client’s needs.

•Assist the Operations Coordinator to deliver Health & Safety Inductions and tool box talks to all Venue Crew members.

•Communicating and providing assistance to other departments and the touring production with their operational requirements within the Arena

•Marking out and working accurately from plans.

•Ensuring attention to detail of the work of the Venue Crew.

•Supervising Venue crew and contractors to ensure compliance with venue policies and standards.

•On occasion operating Lighting or other venue systems.

Skills & Competencies required:


•At least two years’ experience within the events industry with service delivery experience.

•Experience of staff supervision

•Experience of manual handling and use of mechanical handling equipment.

•Ability to understand and interpret plans and be able to set up an event according to plan accurately.

•Ability to manage time effectively and prioritise workload to meet strict deadlines.

•Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.

•Leadership qualities

•Ability to build good working relationships with team members, clients, contractors and visiting production teams.

•Awareness of Health & Safety issues associated with the events industry.

•A willingness to learn new skills and to share skills with team members.

•Physically fit, as hard work and manual handling is involved.

•Ability to communicate with colleagues and visitors at all levels professionally.

•Well presented (some uniform provided)

•Counterbalance Fork Lift truck training.


•A Health and Safety qualification (such as IOSH working safely) and/or practical experience in understanding risk assessments and method statements would be an advantage.

•An understanding of lighting systems.

•An understanding of rigging.

Full on the job training will be provided for all successful candidates.

Rate of Pay: Competitive hourly rates of pay, plus holiday pay accrual (paid fortnightly)
